The Declaration of Independence has had a profound global impact on human rights and is seen as a moral guide for the United States. Abraham Lincoln regarded it as a foundational statement of principles for interpreting the Constitution and highlighted it in his famous Gettysburg Address in 1863. Its second sentence—affirming equality and unalienable rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—is one of the most renowned lines in world history.

Summer Landscape Update: Fire-Wise and Water-Smart Planting for Our Community
As the summer sun starts to shine brighter, our Landscape Sub Committee has been hard at work planning improvements that enhance the beauty of our community and make it more resilient.
We’re excited to share that a brand-new plant palette is now available! This updated collection of plant material and front yard design ideas focuses on reducing fire risk while also supporting water conservation—two important goals for our Southern California environment.
Why Fire-Wise Plants?
Fire safety is a growing concern across the state, especially during the hot, dry months. The new plant palette includes species that are less flammable, provide ideas that include defensible space, and are strategically arranged to create fire-smart front yards. These selections also help support community-wide safety initiatives and align with best practices recommended by fire protection agencies.
Designed for Water Conservation
We know how important it is to be good stewards of our water supply. The committee’s plant selections are drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and well-suited for our climate—meaning they use less water without sacrificing curb appeal. You’ll find flowering groundcovers, structural succulents, and native shrubs that thrive with minimal irrigation.
Access the Plant Palette
You can now view the Improved Gallery Plant Palette on our community website. It’s a growing resource! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be updating the page to include a table of contents, and clickable links to help you learn more about each selection and Harvest is working on design templates, coming soon.
If you’re considering some changes or just looking to swap out a few thirsty plants, this new plant palette is here to help you make beautiful, environmentally responsible choices. Homeowners are required to work with Harvest when they will be continuing to maintaining the planters, which also provides a one year replacement warranty on plantings. The front yard modification program will be in addition to the front yard enhancement program.
Questions or Feedback?
We welcome your input! The Landscape Committee meets monthly and encourages residents to reach out with comments, suggestions, or ideas. Together, we can continue to make our neighborhood safer, more sustainable, and more beautiful. The Board of Directors are working to finalize the homeowner application for front yard modification requests.

Board Actions:
Pool Motor Replacement
Tabled a motion to replace three standard one speed pool motors (motors, not pumps, pumps are ok) with three (3) variable speed motors that are more energy efficient pending more specific data regarding cost savings.
Tree Trimming Proposals
Tabled a motion to approve a proposal by Great Scott for the spring/summer tree trimming pending cost clarification from another bidder.
Putting Green Proposal & Survey Result
Recent survey results showed a preference for continuing the putting greens as a Gallery amenity. However, root invasion is a problem. The Board approved a motion to have the roots removed on Hole #5 (the worst of the holes showing root invasion) as a test to determine whether additional holes might also be similarly treated. Plan is to first address safety issues and increase landscape maintenance. Additional planning is pending.
Landscape Plant Palette
Accepted the new landscape palette as recommended by the Landscape Committee. The new palette is in response to proposed regulations soon to be issued by the Orange County Fire Authority affecting the Immediate Zone, i.e.,the area within 5’ of house walls. Approved plants in the palette are numerous, colorful, drought tolerant, and less woody. The palette will be placed on the Gallery website and available in a binder in the Clubhouse lobby soon.
Microphone System
Approved a proposal submitted by Sweetwater to replace the microphone system in the MPR with cardioid table microphones, a handheld microphone, and a lavalier microphone.

Reminder About Online Registrations
from the Recreation Committee
It has recently become an issue at events that some residents have brought guests who were not signed up or who had not paid for the event. Residents who have not registered for an event with a fee or with participant limits will not be admitted. Residents who have not registered for a free event will only be admitted if space allows.
All Residents are reminded of The Gallery “Online Event Registration Rules & Regulations” which are referenced on every event registration form.
Click the orange graphic to see the rules.
The Rules for multiple registrations are:
- Each household is allowed 2 registrations. One must be a Gallery resident.
- If a 3rd person resides in a household and that person is a registered “tenant”, “occupant”, or “caregiver”, that person may also register for events.
- If an event is later opened to guests, additional registrations may be purchased.
- The honor system will be relied upon for enforcement.
If you have registered for an event and are unable to attend, please contact the office ASAP so the next person on waiting list can be notified that an opening has become available.
We appreciate your consideration for others.
Be Scam Smart
Scammers attempt to reach you by phone, by text, and by email.
NEVER give money or personal or financial information to an UNSOLICITED contact.
Ways To Outsmart Today's Most Costly Online Fraud
If it feels like financial scams are getting worse, that's because they are. Here are smart habits you can adopt to guard your financial life in an increasingly risky digital world.
1. Don’t Trust—Verify Before You Click
Phishing remains one of the most effective tools in a scammer's arsenal. Fraudsters send emails or texts that look official—maybe from your bank or a retailer you trust—but clicking those links can lead you to fake websites built to steal your login info or install malware. Before clicking, hover over the link to check the actual URL. Double-check the sender's name and email address. And when in doubt, go directly to the company's site rather than clicking on a link in a message.
2. Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)—Now
Even if your password gets stolen, two-factor authentication (2FA) can stop a scammer in their tracks. This adds a second step—usually a code sent to your phone or generated by an app—that's required to log in.
It takes less than a minute to turn on 2FA for your most important accounts: email, bank, credit cards, and social media. Use apps like Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator to keep things secure. Think of it as a lock on your digital front door.
3. Keep Your Devices Updated
Cybercriminals are always looking for outdated software to exploit. If your phone, browser, or apps aren't current, you're an easy target.
Turn on automatic updates for your phone, laptop, and major apps. It's also smart to run antivirus programs like Norton or Bitdefender, which help block threats before they can do real damage.
4. Monitor Your Credit for Early Warning Signs
You might not know you've been scammed until it shows up on your credit report—and by then, the damage may be done. That's why regular credit monitoring is essential.
Services like Credit Karma, Experian, and Equifax alert you if someone tries to open a new account or take out a loan in your name. Make it a habit to check your reports at least monthly and freeze your credit if anything looks suspicious.
5. If You Are NOT Using a Password Manager, Use STRONG Passwords
At least 12 characters is ideal; 20 characters is even better.
Opt for a passphrase to create a longer password.
A passphrase can be easier to remember than random mixed characters. It can be a sequence of at least four words without spaces and something meaningful to you, such as myb!rDP0lly#1!, which loosely translates to “my bird Polly is No. 1.”
Some people create such a phrase using association techniques. Think of the site you’re visiting and create a password that relates to the service, perhaps Ih8tethisb&nk$! for “I hate this bank” or N3v3rsh0ph3r3ag8in$ for “never shop here again.”

So Long Passwords: Introducing Passkeys
In today’s digital world, keeping your online accounts secure is more important than ever. But remembering passwords—especially all the different ones for email, shopping, banking, and social media—can be frustrating and confusing. Fortunately, there’s a new, easier, and safer way to log in: Passkeys.
What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys are a new kind of technology that lets you sign in to websites and apps without using a password. Instead of typing something in, you simply use your face, TouchID (fingerprint), device PIN—just like when you unlock your phone, QR Code, or voice recognition.
Passkeys work with devices you already use, like iPhones, Android phones, tablets, or computers. Once set up, signing in becomes as easy as confirming it’s really you.
Why We Love Passkeys
1. No More Passwords to Remember - You don’t have to remember long or complicated passwords. Your device does the work for you.
2. Very Secure - Passkeys are much harder for hackers to steal. They’re stored safely on your device, and they can’t be guessed like traditional passwords.
3. No More Phishing - Scam emails and fake websites often trick people into giving away passwords. Passkeys only work on trusted websites, helping protect you from fraud.
4. Works Across Your Devices - If you use more than one device, like a phone and a tablet, your passkeys can sync safely between them, especially if you’re using services like Apple or Google.
How Do You Use Passkeys?
Once a website or app supports passkeys, it will give you the option to “Sign in with a passkey” when you log in. You’ll then use Face ID, your fingerprint, your device PIN, voice access, or QR code (redirect to another device using passkeys) to confirm it’s you. That’s it—you’re in!
Here’s a simple example:
● You go to your bank’s website on your iPad.
● It asks if you want to use a passkey.
● You tap “Yes,” use Face ID to confirm, and you’re signed in—no typing required!
Getting Started
Many major websites and services now support passkeys, including:
● Google (Gmail, YouTube)
● Apple (iCloud)
● Microsoft (Outlook)
● Amazon
● Banks, PayPal, Financial Institutes such as Vanguard
● Health portals, such as MyChart
● Password Managers
Ask a tech-savvy family member or a community tech volunteer to help set up your first passkey. Once it’s done, you’ll enjoy faster and safer access to your favorite online services.
Say Goodbye to Password Hassles
Passkeys are the future—and they’re designed to be easy for everyone to use. Whether you’re checking your email, ordering groceries, or chatting with the grandkids, passkeys make it simpler and safer.

A Walk Through Time
A great way to exercise both your body and your mind is to visit the Walkable Historical Timeline at Irvine’s Great Park. You have probably seen the giant orange which occasionally decorates the sky on the east side of the I-5 freeway, but the Great Park offers much more. One feature is the timeline, which displays 162 events on about a half mile of a taxi strip from the former El Toro Marine Corp Air Station. Two former history professors from UCI developed the timeline which begins at 13,000 BCE and, after a recent updating, runs through 2019. Included are significant historical events as well as groundbreaking innovations, cultural shifts, and local Orange County “happenings” such as the opening of Disneyland. An online handbook is available which reviews and expands the recorded events.
I truly enjoyed walking over recent history, especially events I remember occurring. Seeing these recalled events put in a timeframe gave me a new, integrated perspective. For example, during 1981 Orange County reached 2,000,000 in population, the first woman (Sandra Day O’Connor) was appointed to the Supreme Court, and the first personal computer was released.
To reach the Great Park and the walkable timeline, travel north on the I-5 freeway to Sand Canyon, exit the off ramp right and take the first left on Marine Way. To start at the beginning of the timeline use Parking Lot 1. However, the timeline runs right through the center of the park and one can start at any point. The walk is flat, but fairly sunny so good shoes, a hat, and water are a must. There is much more to see at the Great Park including event venues, sports fields, an ice rink, art gallery and museum but we will get to that at another time. Happy walking and learning!

Summer Kickoff - June Events
Summer Events Kickoff at the Gallery – June Recap!
June was a buzzing month of celebration and community here at the Gallery, as we kicked off the summer season with a full calendar of fun, food, and festivity!
The Gallery Recreation Committee hosted three fantastic paid events that brought neighbors together for memorable evenings—and the highlight of the month was our free community celebration honoring Talega’s 25th Anniversary! Residents gathered to toast this incredible milestone, reconnect with friends, and enjoy Ms. Debbie's ice cream truck, live music, and the cake and cupcakes by Daisy Cakes. Great Scott provided the hydration station. Harvest sponsored the band and the cake. Alan Smith Pools provided Ms. Debbie's Ice Cream Truck, a famous favorite throughout Talega.
When arriving to the event, owners were asked to put the year they moved in on their name tag. Our winner
- Mary Carlson, who received a prize for being the longest-standing resident of the Gallery—your legacy is inspiring!
- Lynette Shishido, our newest neighbor, also took home a prize—welcome to the community!
We captured so many great moments throughout the month. Click the links below to view the photos.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make June such a success. We can’t wait to keep the good times rolling all summer long! Keep an eye on your inbox and bulletin boards for more events coming soon.

WEEP SCREED (duty of homeowner to correct soil level)
The Association has notified homeowners in Seagarden in writing about ensuring that the weep screed is not covered by soil or debris and that there is at least 2-3 inches of stucco exposed below the weep screed to ensure no flooding can occur. All homeowners and tenants need to be vigilant in checking around the exterior of the house, especially during heavy rains. If rain water is not draining adequately or fast enough, measures should be taken to remediate the problem as soon as possible. If any interior damage is caused by weep screed issues, the homeowner is responsible for the financial consequences.

Understanding Guest Policies at The Gallery: What You Need to Know About Hosting Visitors Under 55
Living in a 55+ community like The Gallery comes with many benefits—quiet surroundings, shared interests, and amenities tailored to an active adult lifestyle. But along with these perks, there are specific rules in place to ensure the community remains compliant with federal guidelines and maintains the quality of life that residents expect.
One of the most important—and often misunderstood—rules pertains to overnight guests under the age of 55. Whether it’s adult children visiting from out of town or grandchildren staying for the weekend, it’s essential to understand what’s allowed so you can host your loved ones while staying within the community’s regulations.
Why These Rules Exist
The Gallery, like all age-restricted communities, is governed by the Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA), which allows certain housing developments to legally limit residency based on age. In order to maintain its status as a 55+ community, at least 80% of the occupied units must have at least one resident who is 55 or older.
To preserve this status and the lifestyle it supports, guest policies are enforced—particularly when it comes to visitors under the age threshold.
The Guest Policy for Those Under 55
At The Gallery, owners may host overnight guests under the age of 55 for no more than 60 days in a calendar year. This applies whether those days are consecutive or spread out over time. This rule ensures that the primary demographic remains adults aged 55 and over while still allowing residents to enjoy visits from family and friends.
Here’s a quick summary:
- Guests under 55 may stay overnight for a maximum of 60 days per calendar year
- These 60 days can be consecutive or non-consecutive
- The rule applies to each unit, not each guest
Best Practices for Residents
To help you enjoy time with loved ones while staying within the rules, here are a few tips:
- Track visits: Keep a simple log of guest stays to ensure you don’t exceed the 60-day limit.
- Communicate with management: Let the front office or community association know when you’ll have guests, especially for extended stays.
- Know the rules: Review your community’s full guest policy regularly to stay informed about any updates or additional guidelines.
A Balance of Comfort and Compliance
The guest policy at The Gallery is designed to strike a balance between maintaining the integrity of a 55+ community and allowing residents to spend meaningful time with younger family members and friends. By following the guidelines, you help preserve the community’s unique environment—and ensure it remains a welcoming, well-regulated place to call home.
If you have questions about the guest policy or need clarification about specific situations, don’t hesitate to reach out to the community management team. They’re here to help!
