Stolen and Washed Checks

April 11, 2023

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR MARCH BANK STATEMENTS

This is a recommendation to look carefully at your February and March checking account statements to confirm the amount of all check transactions. Make sure that the amount the bank paid matches your check register.

Also, consider following up on any checks you mailed in February and March that have not cleared. It may be prudent to stop payment on those checks and reissue.

A black Gel pen such as Uniball 207 is recommended to prevent fraudulent check washing. The gel in this pen is a pigment-based ink that forms an indelible bond with the paper and resists check washing.

WHY THESE REMINDERS?

A number of Gallery residents had mailed checks stolen in February and March. Some were “washed” and illegally cashed for larger amounts than the original and some were just thrown away. Some residents are just now discovering the problem when they look at their March bank statement.

According to two PO supervisors, thefts occurred at the San Clemente Post Office sub-station on Calle Negocio. We have been told by the supervisor that this sub-station is installing new cameras and an alarm on the rear loading dock, however, it is currently safer to deliver mail that contains checks to the main PO on Pico. We also understand that the US Postal Inspection Service is investigating, not the local Sherriff’s office.

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS AND IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY YOUR BANK OF ANY DISCREPANCIES!

Have a great day!
