Your Password May Not Be Safe

March 7, 2025

A Gallery resident with a thoughtfully-crafted password to his retirement account's automatic deposit profile, recently learned the recipient bank had been changed by a hacker. Turns out his password was hacked, even though it met strong password criteria several years ago.

According to multiple sources, a strong password for your online accounts should be:

  • No shorter than 12 - 17 characters,

  • Different for each online account.

There are some password practices that you should avoid:

  • Don't use the typical "word + number" format.

  • Don't include publicly available personal information, such as your birthday or anniversary.

  • Don't use common shorthand substitutions (such as using "@" for the letter "a").

Presented by the Gallery Tech Team, the Password Security Workshop is designed to help you learn how to create STRONG passwords that are easy to remember.
